This is the easiest of the three standard blades (Ottertail, Modified Ottertail, Tripper), because the widest part of the blade is up at the shoulder, close to your lower hand. The 28" length still gives you plenty of pull, but you feel less strain. Because water is less dense at the surface, more dense farther down, this blade distributes the pressure more evenly over its surface. Although such an easy blade to use, this paddle is still fine for tripping, especially for solo paddlers.

"I have canoed for almost 40 years. About l2 years ago, I bought my first good paddle, a Kettlewell Modified Ottertail. The first thing that struck me about Ray's paddles was that they were beautifully crafted (the graining of the wood and shape of the paddle immediately got my attention). When I held the paddle, it felt good; the shaft and grip surfaces were smooth and round enough so there were no pressure points; I liked the weight and balance. These feelings were reinforced when I actually paddled with it; it moved in the water even more smoothly than I imagined. It made me feel as though my canoeing skills had improved significantly. I have many of Ray's paddles now and I continue to enjoy using them as much as I did that first time."
